Would you like a list of all the things that have broken so far this trip, one week in?
- My cleats (and almost my ankle)
- Not broken but, I lost my mitts (which will have to be replaced because my fingers go numb which is an impediment to knitting)
- My chair (elastic snapped - repaired)
- My ‘klick’ mount for my handle bar bag. (Bolts snapped when tightened which was quite a surprise - held in place by cable ties)
- and last night, My tent!
Now, I did suspect this would be a windy trip. And I did suspect that might be a problem. So I did have a solution. I just couldn’t apply that solution in the dark, at midnight, in a gale. So I stuck it together with duct tape, insulation taped the click thing on (tension up from the bend, down from the clip thing so a hope of balance) and crossed my fingers. Not the best night’s sleep but, everything held.
This morning (after googling where the nearest tent shop is - answer, quite far away) I packed up early but due to restringing poles to be able to add the solution (a bit of pipe) I set off late.
I was full of the joys when I finally hit the road. There is great satisfaction to be derived from fixing things. Even if it does take rather a lot of time and patience. I cycled along first into the town to have a look around, then onto a lighthouse where rather than climb up it I looked at it from below and ate a very nice sandwich. The next stop was a supermarket for tea then the last hour of riding to get here.
I was greatly delighted by the special place reserved on site for cyclists but more so by my successful pitching and so having somewhere to sleep tonight.
