A difficult day. Well a long one anyway. I have spent hours and hours cycling through champagne country. All to make it to Epernay to see the tour. I don't even watch the tour. And I've had NO champagne.
I started out at a reasonable hour and completed the first of my 4 legs on time. I stopped at a handy supermarket to pick up my usual cous cous, carrot, banana, rice pudding selection adding the new line in creamed mushroom to my smorgasbord of veggie delights. I ate half sitting outside hiding from the rain and saved half for later.
The whole town was a little industrial and odd,not somewhere I'd recommend. (I'll write down the name when I get back to my map.)
So I continued. In the rain. The only thing to do in such situations is put your head down and go for it. Which I did. But then fatigue got its claws into me and I swear to god, that little leg took forever. Eventually when I did arrive at Chateau Thiery I was in a rush so - quite foolishly now I think of it- didn't stop.
The next leg was quicker and I began to feel a little better. I stopped in the vain hope of a sandwich but got 2 pain au chocolates instead. These and an orange juice sustained me into the fourth leg.
For the last part of the journey I chose to go with the straighter less hilly main road to save still more time. A good choice as the mud slides along the quieter road had rendered my poor chain a squeaking mess. The final part of the journey was fuelled by a fall. I think the adrenalin is what got me to just outside Epinery. Then, would you believe it? A double arrow hill just to top off my day.
I made it up, slowly. It started totally pouring down (it had lessened to a drizzle for a while there) and I found the campsite. There are flags all over the place and lots of cyclists including 3 other tourists. A couple with more luggage each than I have ever carried and a man with two teeny panniers and a tent. I assume he lives in Lycra.
Bon Courage count: 3
