The last epic ride of the holidays.
A bright warm sunny day for once. After stocking up on sun cream (a spray that sprays even if you're holding the bottle upside down- and factor 50. Perfection in a bottle) and food I head over the bridge and out of Bratislava.
It was another straight ahead day. After 20k or so I was feeling good so I stopped at the Danubian art museum. A collection of sculptures and paintings shown off rather well by the bright blue sky.
I headed on and on. The road from there was straight and without shade. It started to seem rather relentless. How do you choose where to stop for lunch when there is nothing changed for 30km. In the end I just chose there.
The despite the heat I was going good. 23kph was a breeze.
I crossed a bridge and it was more of the same. I found a town and a shop for some much needed water and then chose the bike path because it went through woods. I was still hoping for shade.
I didn't get it and the path turned out to be deep gravel. I couldn't stand that for 17 km so I turned off on a 'road' to take me that last 20k.
That's a photo of the road down there. In the end I got off and pushed. I hit a main road and the last 20km were into a strong foreboding head wind. It amounted to nothing but I have taken tent precautions. You never know.
By the point that I reached the border crossing (a fancy way of saying bridge) I was really toiling. The sight of the 24hour Tesco gave me a giggle and I arrived at the site in good spirits. If not a little sore.
130km and two days until Budapest.
