A nice easy day. The start - saving my mauled shoe - was a little distressing. And the packing up in the rain - again - a little irritating but overall ...
I started slowly and the unsurfaced wet up and down through the rest of the valley was hard work. By the time I got to Sigmaringen I was feeling the miles so more than happy to stop for lunch at the castle in the middle of town.
Back down hill to pick up the bike path and on through the last of the hills to
Mengen. A pause there for a supermarket and then the pleasant surprise of meeting some campers from too nights ago. A diversion for roadworks meant I followed them, with their satnav but, as we hit a main road and a sign to a town unknown my spider senses started to tingle (I like those little Donauradweg signs, they usually pop up just as you start to doubt yourself but here ... doubt and no sign) so I got out my trusty compass. Turns out the road was going east and I wanted north so I about turned and headed back to the road works. God knows where the other 5 people (follow the leader going on) ended up?
The flat farmland was a breeze after all those ups and downs of the cliffs and at times, 30kph was perfectly achievable (looking back that might have been wind assisted). The sun came out and the last few Ks were a doddle.
Finally, I arrived at the campsite and pitched my little tent.
I took a shower then headed up to the supermarket and for a tour of the town. Stalks were nesting on the roof of the town hall, just as the guidebook says.
I'm not the only one here. I have been joined by the Zagreb to London 'by two wheels' cycling team. Marc, in his speedos, came to invite me to join their BBQ but as a veggie I just had to decline. I did say I'd come over later but something about the blow up doll in the back of their van somewhat put me off.
Some seem sane though, and no malice I think. They have given me a badge which is nice.
