A restful breakfast, a last tv catchup then off I went. I posted home some holiday gifts before heading towards the station. I couldn't resist one last mooch and so wound my way along past the shops.
Getting on and off the train was easy enough and without further ado, I was in Southampton. There was I, cycling along, not a care in the world then (dramatic pause) my pannier rack snapped. Well, to be accurate the screw did. This would be less of a disaster if the other one wasn't already hanging on in there with the help of some tape.
I blame that horrible hot day. I hit a hole in the road at the pinnacle of my happy descent. It was such a bang that I knew it must have caused some damage. I was very impressed my wheels still went round.
Luckily for me, touring rule #479 is never travel without duct tape. Is there nothing it won't fix? I bound up the bike the best I could, adjusted the load a bit and tried to make it a smooth ride. A friendly AA man offered his assistance but couldn't find the thingy (jubilee clip perhaps?) he was looking for.
I had wondered about which site I was going to choose. The kerffufel above made that easy: the first one.
It's a forestry commission site and by their standards luxurious. There are toilets and hot showers. I'm camped in a little clearing in quite close proximity to some horse muck.
It's all very relaxing.
